President, UN official discuss security issues
SANA’A, Jan 10(Saba)- President Ali Abdullah Saleh met on Wednesday in Aden, the Executive Director of UN Office for Drug Control and Crime Prevention in Vienna Antonio Maria Costa. The talks reviewed mutual relations and means to reinforce and develop the ongoing collaboration between Yemen and the UN office in Vienna. The UN official expressed the International Organization’s admiration of Yemen’s accomplishments in the democratic field which represent a unique example in the region, commending the great success of the Yemeni presidential and local elections which took place recently. He also appreciated the efforts and excellent successes that Yemen have achieved in the field of the organized crimes prevention and drugs smuggling and terrorism control, affirming the UN’s care and readiness to sustain cooperation and support for Yemen in such fields. Moreover, Costa voiced the International Organization appreciation of Yemen’s receiving of hundreds of thousands of Somali refugees. For his part, president Saleh stressed the importance of the communal work of the regional and international bodies to cooperate and coordinate in order to control drugs smuggling, organized crimes and terrorism, noting the significance of the UN Organization and the EU financial, technical and expertise support for Yemen to reinforce its ability to encounter such crimes. He emphasized the positive and constructive role that the UN has to play in solving conflicts and differences in the world apart from any pressure from the international powers. AM/ TN SABA
